Lincoln

I put my truck in Park just outside Gram’s diner. Her Civic sits in the spot next to me, so I know Macey is inside. I imagine she’s pretty pissed at me since I skipped dinner last night. I tried to apologize, but she was already in her room by the time I got home.

I’d stood just outside her bedroom door, imagining her dark hair splayed out over the stark white pillowcase. Part of me really wanted to walk in, to drop to my knees and confess everything right then and there. The more I’m around her, the less of a hold I have on myself.

I know that if I kiss her like I want to, if I have even one taste of her lips, I will throw my entire vow out the window.

Fuck celibacy—literally.

I need to know if my feelings are real—if they go past some childhood crush and broken heart.

For both of us.

My cell rings, and I look down to see Emmit Wayne’s contact flashing on the screen. He probably has a job for me, and Lord knows I could use the money. However, this is more important. I know that until I fix things with Macey, I’m not going to be able to focus on anything else.

I open the door of my truck and climb out, bouquet of wildflowers in my hand. They’re her favorite—always have been. Because according to her, roses are too formal.

At least that’s what she told the world. My bet is she hates them because they were her mom’s favorite. I still remember walking into her house around her parent’s anniversary and seeing one dozen roses for each year they’d been together.

I shake my head. I’ll never understand Laurie’s reason for leaving. Not that I have any room to judge, I ran too.

With each step toward the front door, my heart thuds in my chest. She could say no, tell me to go fuck myself, and I can’t even blame her if that’s what she does, but it will make the rest of our lives fucking awkward. Because hate me or not, I’m going to be here every step of the way.

I could just give in, give us both what we want. Bury myself in her and fuck us both senseless.

I mean, it is apparent she wants me as badly as I want her. But each and every time I consider that—and I have, many times over the last few days—I know it’ll never be enough. I need more. I need to get to know her again, to learn about the woman she is rather than stumbling along with the myriad of facts I know about teenage Macey.

The café door is unlocked, so I shove it open and step inside. Music fills my ears, “Made That Way” by Jordan Davis playing through the café’s speakers.

I grin. There literally couldn’t be a more perfect song playing in the background.

The kitchen door swings open, and Macey steps out, eyes focused down at her phone. “You’re early—” She looks up at me, her words stopping mid-sentence.
